Which FSSAI licence do you need?

Food businesses in India fall into three tiers of FSSAI approval. Choosing the wrong one means rework, and having none risks penalties.

The three tiers

FSSAI approvals come in three forms: a basic registration for the smallest food businesses, a state licence for medium businesses and a central licence for the largest ones and for certain activities such as import and operations in several states.

What decides your tier

The tier depends on the kind of food business, its turnover or production capacity, and whether it operates in one state or several. Each activity has its own limits, and the limits are set by the regulator. We confirm the category that applies at the time you apply.

After you have it

A licence is not a one-time task. Missing a renewal is the most common mistake.

  • Display the licence or registration at your premises.
  • Renew before it expires, because late renewal can add a fee and a lapse is a risk during inspections.
  • File the annual return where your licence category requires it.
  • Update the licence when you change address, products or ownership.
  • Keep labelling and records in order for inspections.

Home kitchens and online sellers

Selling food from home or through an online marketplace generally still needs registration or a licence at the right scale. Marketplaces usually ask to see it.
