Start from what your customers ask for
The best way to choose is to look at tender documents, client questionnaires and export requirements. They usually name the standard they expect.
The common ones
Other product marks, such as CE or BIS, are about specific products and markets, not management systems.
- ISO 9001: quality management. The most widely asked-for standard, useful for almost any manufacturer or service business.
- ISO 14001: environmental management, for businesses with environmental obligations or customers who ask.
- ISO 45001: occupational health and safety, common for contractors and industrial sites.
- ISO 27001: information security, usually asked by IT, outsourcing and data-handling businesses.
- ISO 22000 (with HACCP and GMP): food safety, for food manufacturers and packers.
How certification works
You build a documented system, run it for a period, and an accredited certification body audits it. If it passes, you receive a certificate that is valid for a fixed term, with surveillance audits in between. The certificate is issued by the certification body, not by a consultant.
Make it real, not paperwork
Auditors check that your team follows the system. A simple system that people actually use passes more easily than a thick manual nobody reads.
Quick answers
Can I get several ISO certificates together?
Yes. Many businesses combine standards, since they share common elements such as document control and internal audits.
Is ISO certification mandatory?
Usually not by law, but it is often required by customers and tenders.
